Design Exhibitors Meeting to view staging, ask questions and preview Rosecliff will be held on Monday, May 11, 2009 at 10 a.m. on the terrace of Rosecliff. Exhibitors' packets will be distributed at this meeting.
Class 1 "greenFLORESCENCE" Challenge Class Foyer - 4 Entries
"Art gallery? Who needs it? Look up at the swirling silver-lined clouds in the magnificent blue sky or at the silently blazing stars at midnight. How could indoor be more masterfully created than God's museum of nature?" ~ Greg Livingston
An expressive design of all fresh plant material, reflecting the illuminating power of nature in the skies above us. Staged on a black Greek Key pedestal, 42" H x 13" W x 13" D, with upper and lower design spaces. Displayed against a black fabric backdrop, 10 feet high. A photo and sketch of the pedestal will be provided to each exhibitor. Challenge Class, refer to Design Rule # 21.

Class 2 "greenPOWER" Salon Center - 4 Entries

A duo design of predominantly fresh plant material that captures the opposing sides of natural forces. Staged on a 30" H X 30" W x 30" D wooden cube, painted soft green. Each side of design to be judged separately. No height restrictions. Side A: Green Goodness Side B: Green Evil

A mass design of all-fresh plant material, which must have been grown in the designer’s garden, arranged in a basket of any type. No height restrictions. Staged on a pedestal 42" H with a 16" square top, painted a soft green.

Class 4 "greenBEAUTY" Ballroom - 4 Entries

A traditional design of abundant plant material with an emphasis on native species. Exotic or imported plant material may be incorporated to add color and texture; however statement of intent should separate exotics and natives to educate the public. Committee will provide a list of possible native plant material. Staged in a large niche with an oval opening, 35" H x 28" W, painted Rosecliff white.

Class 5 "greenABSTRACTIONS" Ballroom Center - 4 Entries

A large-scale, creative floor design of all fresh plant material capturing nature gone wild. Designs to be staged in front of a 10-foot tall, transparent green screen in the center of the ballroom. Designs to be assigned on a first come, first serve basis: Tornado, Tsunami, Volcano, Hurricane. Designers encouraged to be as creative as possible and to incorporate contemporary design techniques. Multiple components and containers may be used. Each arranger will have 4’ x 4’ of floor space (16 square feet).

Class 6 "greenWAVES" Ballroom - 4 Entries

An underwater design in a glass container of predominantly fresh plant material reflecting the beauty and importance of our marine environment. Designs will be staged on a mirrored pedestal, 42" high with a 14" mirrored top. Pedestals placed in front of a 10 foot tall x 4 foot wide, translucent green fabric screen. Accessories may be used with discretion. The use of distilled water is strongly encouraged to keep design water clean.

Class 7 "greenPIONEERS" Ballroom - 4 Entries

A mythical table for four of predominantly fresh plant material, celebrating a famous environmental pioneer. Designers are encouraged to be as imaginative as possible. 48" round tables, provided by the committee, will be grouped around the Rosecliff piano in front of the fireplace. Table covering and all components (which may or may not be traditional dining components) to be provided by exhibitor. Statement of intent required.

A horizontal design expressing the resilient beauty of our natural world, using predominantly fresh plant material. Designs staged on consoles 42" H x 43 1/2" W x 17" D, backed by 6-foot tall convex wall, painted Rosecliff white. Four interpretations to be assigned on a first come, first serve basis: New England’s marshes, the Rain Forest, the Great Barrier Reef, the Polar Ice Cap.

Class 9 "greenSURPRISES" Dining Room Hallway Niche - 4 Entries

A suspended, free-moving design reflecting one of nature’s surprises, made of dried or fresh plant material in a black niche, 18" H x 12" W x 12" D. Niche to be placed on a 42" H stand. Niches fitted with an individual electric light with a dimmer switch, may be enhanced. Niches will be provided to designers at the exhibitors’ meeting.

Class 10 "greenFINERY" Mail-in Class Dining Room - 4 Entries

A miniature, mail-in design celebrating one of nature's most beautiful creatures, the butterfly. Designs, not more than five inches in any direction, to be made of all dried plant material and to be perched on a mannequin hand, which will be provided by the committee. To be staged in a 12" H x 12" W x 12" D white niche, with a 9 1/2 inch circular opening. Background and floor of niche, as well as the hand, may be enhanced. Design may be mailed in (see rule #22) or installed on entry day.

Class 11 "greenGEOMETRY" Dining Room Table - 4 Entries

A three-dimensional design of predominantly fresh plant material incorporating a pavé element, reflecting the diversity of New England’s changing seasons. Designs will be assigned on a first come, first serve basis: Winter, Spring, Summer, Fall. Designs to be staged on sod provided by the committee, on a 30" H dining room table. Each designer's space not to exceed 30" W x 40" L.

Class 12 "greenANIMALS" Dining Room - 4 Entries
"To me a lush carpet of pine needles or spongy grass is more welcome than the most luxurious Persian rug." ~ Helen Keller
Celebrating Newport’s famous Green Animals Topiary Garden, this design is a topiary to be created of all fresh green plant material. Committee will supply the animal topiary forms for the designs, which will be displayed on 42" green pedestals with 14" square tops.

Glossary
Creative Design: A design in which plant materials and/or other forms and shapes are organized in an inventive and ingenious manner to create an original concept.
Duo Design: A free-standing Creative Design organized in one unit, but as two designs. Each side appears as a different design from the other, and each side is part of a separate class. Each side is judged separately.
Floor Design: A large Creative Design staged on the floor with no height requirement.
Horizontal Design: A design in which the horizontal line dominates. May include horizontal mass, horizontal layering, or other techniques.
Mass Design: A design that is an art form placed in space, usually using a profusion of plant material of varying forms and sizes. These materials are organized within a closed silhouette, which has more solids than voids.
New Exhibitor: A person or group who is entering The Newport Flower Show for the first time.
Novice: An exhibitor who has never won a blue ribbon in a major flower show.
Underwater Design - A Creative Design having component/s, including some or all plant material, submerged in water to create interest.
