If Newport has a tree that represents the African continent, at least in appearance, it is the European beech tree. It’s smooth gray bark, like the skin of an elephant, and its dimensions, immense in both beauty and physical dominance, make the beech a Newport landscape icon much like the iconic status of the elephant in the African landscape. Join Chris Fletcher from Bartlett Tree Experts for a trolley tour to the Elms and Chepstow to see some of Newport’s most prestigious beech trees in their many forms. These are true rarities among beeches.

The Elephant in the Garden
(WALKING TOUR of Rosecliff Grounds – meet at Bartlett Display Tent on Front Lawn)

Robert Frost’s poem Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening reflects on the scene of a beautiful wood filling up with snow. The speaker in the poem doesn’t have time to stop to appreciate the fullness of its beauty. Our wood in Newport is “lovely, dark, and deep” not so much for its physical depth, although one could argue otherwise, but more for its historical and cultural depths. Join Chris Fletcher from Bartlett Tree Experts on a tour that will make you stop in appreciation for Newport’s cultural legacy of leaf and wood steeped not in snow but the cultural dimensions of the nineteenth century garden of Rosecliff.
