Come join us for a fun hour learning about carnivorous plants. The New England Carnivorous Plant Society will talk about the different types of plants and how to care for them. Attendees will receive a Venus Fly Trap and Dwarf Papyrus. All materials provided. Limit 15.
Take your plant(s) to Rosecliff on Thursday, June 24, 2010 between 1:30 p.m. and 4:00 p.m. for judging and exhibit during the Newport Flower Show. Advance registration required by contacting the Children’s Division Co-Chair, Elaine Lindh.
Design Workshop Friday, June 25, 2010 1:00 p.m. Rosecliff-Children’s Tent – Back Lawn
Bring your clippers and creativity to create a floral arrangement to be judged and exhibited for the duration of The Newport Flower Show. Advance registration required by contacting the Children’s Division Co-Chair, Elaine Lindh. Limit 15.
1. Anyone age 12 and under is eligible to enter. All children must be accompanied by an adult at all times.
2. Children’s horticulture entries should be dropped off for judging at the Children’s tent at Rosecliff on Thursday, June 24, 2010 between 1:30 p.m. and 4:00 p.m. On-site parking at Rosecliff is available at this time only. A parking pass will be issued to exhibitors at the design workshop in advance.
3. Exhibits must be removed on Sunday, June 27, 2010 between 5:00 p.m. and 5:30 p.m. The committee will not be responsible for any exhibits left after 6:00 p.m.
All on-site workshops will be held in the Children’s Tent on the back lawn at Rosecliff. Please note that adults must accompany children at all times. Adults will be required to purchase a Show ticket to enter the Show grounds.
Mini African Landscapes Saturday, June 26, 2010 – 11:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. Lee Menard and Karen Lambe, University of Rhode Island Master Gardeners
Children will learn about the flora, fauna and the animals that depend on them of three African landscapes- savannah, jungle, and desert. Using dried and fresh plant materials as well as additional creative art materials such as play dough, the children will make a miniature model of the landscape of their choice. All materials provided. Advance registration required by contacting the Children’s Division Co-Chair, Elaine Lindh. Limit 15.
Seed Secrets Saturday, June 26, 2010 – 1:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. Lee Menard and Karen Lambe, University of Rhode Island Master Gardeners
Want to find out the secrets inside a seed? Using newspaper pots they make, the children will plant gourd seeds to put in gardens at home. In the process, they learn how seeds become plants by viewing the different stages of a plant’s growth. Lastly, each child will decorate a gourd to use as a birdhouse to hang in the garden. All materials provided. Advance registration required by contacting the Children’s Division Co-Chair, Elaine Lindh. Limit 15.
Reptile Show Sunday, June 27, 2010 – 11:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. Shawn Fay, Regal Reptiles
Shawn Fay of Regal Reptiles will present and discuss reptiles and the environments they live in. Animals will include snakes, lizards, turtles, frogs and more! Children will be able to look at and touch the animals. No advance registration required and no class size limit.
African Drumming Workshop Sunday, June 27, 2010 – 1:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. Sidy Maïga, Master Drummer-Providence Black Repertory Company
Come enjoy this master drummer! Sidy Maïga is a master percussionist from Bamako, Mali, West Africa. He specializes in djembe and dun dun and is trained in the complex traditional rhythms of Mali. He will perform drumming pieces and talk about the role of drumming in Mali culture. No advance registration required and no class size limit.
